CAL (Client Access License bzw. Client-Zugriffslizenz) is the entitlement to access the server and use its services.

A CAL is not software.

To be able to access a server, so-called Client Access Licenses (CALs) must be purchased. CALs are not standalone software but access rights. A distinction is made between User CALs (= Nutzer CALs) and Device CALs (= Geräte CALs). Which of the two is required essentially depends on how the server is used.

A license per user makes sense when a user accesses the server from multiple devices; the number of required licenses is therefore determined by the number of users or employees in a company.

A license per device, on the other hand, makes sense when different users access the server via the same device; the number of required licenses is therefore determined by the number of devices in a company. This type of CALs is therefore recommended when the number of employees is greater than the number of devices that access the server.
