The operating system is, simply put, the software that provides all the hardware to the user (in relation to the BIOS).

When deciding which operating system to buy, the hardware is primarily the first step; information from the hardware manufacturers helps here.

Clarify dependencies beforehand

Further dependencies exist between the programs / applications required by the user; here, too, the software manufacturers provide the information about the requirements regarding the operating system and the hardware.

These questions do not arise with relatively new devices, as they often find use in the Windows or Apple world; older hardware, older operating systems and older programs can make checking the requirements very sensible.

Simple requirements

A basic Windows 10 can meet normal user demands well, but if you use any of the points intensively, a higher version of Windows is advisable. 

Linux is interesting

Linux generally includes all functions free of charge, but administration by the user is often only possible with prior knowledge; getting into Linux is, however, very interesting and not overly complicated.

Apple's operating systems are generally considered very stable and secure; however, administration by the user is also extremely restricted in some areas.

Windows is almost the standard

Windows is the most installed operating system; Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 are still installed and operated today.
