Stable infrastructure with Windows Server 2016 Standard

However, the Standard edition does not include Shielded Virtual Machines, Software Defined Networking (SDN) features, Storage Spaces Direct, or Storage Replica. These features are only available with the Windows Server 2016 Datacenter edition.

New licensing model introduced for the first time with Windows Server 2016

In previous versions, both the Standard and Datacenter licenses applied per two physical CPUs. With the new licensing model, there was a shift from per-CPU to per-core licensing. It is assumed that a server has at least 8 cores per processor and at least two processors in total, i.e. 16 cores overall. Therefore, 16 cores per server is the minimum, and at least 8 cores per CPU must be licensed. Better-equipped servers must be upgraded with additional licenses.
